Sleep Science: What a Snooze

Abstract

We all know that sleep is important, but still 1 in 3 adults do not regularly get the recommended amount of uninterrupted sleep they need to protect their health (NIH, n.d.). Current research on the science of sleep is yielding interesting results about the impacts of sleep on human health, how to get better quality sleep, and how sleep-wake cycles impact daily life and schedules. At Purdue University Global, our students come from diverse backgrounds with several key factors that may impact sleep including working while attending university, acting as caregivers to family, and being active members of our nation’s military. Our busy faculty and staff may also struggle with getting enough sleep. In this presentation, members of the Purdue University Global Science Department in the School of General Education will discuss not only the impacts of sleep on health and society, but also research on how and why we sleep with the goal of getting better quality sleep.
