Abstract
Organizations across the United States are increasingly focused on changing candidate recruitment and hiring practices to broaden the diversity of racial and ethnic backgrounds represented at their workplace. However, recent research indicates that traditional leadership models employers often use when communicating with their diverse labor force are often so nebulous and vague in their application, they are inadequate in cultivating an organizational culture defined by empathy, respecting individual experiences, and training employees to spotlight and transform their biases (Odumeru & Ifeanyi, 2013). Researchers are finding that a simple strategy can serve as a foundation to accomplish this - encouraging employees to self-identify their cultural heritage and experiences (Morrison & Chung, 2011). The proposed presentation will explore how researching and articulating one’s own detailed cultural roots can serve as a foundation for overcoming bias-related conflict, and strengthen relational bonds between peers and co-workers of a wide variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds.
