Abstract

Non-traditional students in higher education have always faced unique challenges, such as balancing work and home life with school, little experience with academic expectations, and economic barriers to success (Bruce-Sanford & Soares, 2019). The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the economic and time-management challenges our students face and posed unique mental and physical health concerns. While faculty cannot protect our students from a virus, this crisis provides us with a chance to reassess how we help students manage crisis situations and surmount challenges they face inside and outside of the classroom. Purdue Global has helpful resources for students with disabilities, those who struggle to use sources appropriately, and those who need mental health support (Brown & Kafka, 2020). This presentation will guide faculty and staff to these crucial resources, provide examples to demonstrate how these can benefit students, and offer recommendations for helping students cope so they can succeed in our classrooms.
