A Framework for Understanding and Leveraging Student Motivation

Abstract

Motivation is a critical factor for student success, yet instructors continue to face ongoing challenges in figuring out effective ways to motivate and inspire students. This presentation, “A Framework for Understanding and Leveraging Student Motivation,” will explore work being done by Professor Chris Hulleman and his team of researchers at the University of Virginia’s Motivate Lab, where their mission is to conduct “rigorous motivation research and to understand the mindsets that promote learning, growth, and well-being” (2023, para. 1). Specifically, the presentation will focus on the Expectancy – Value – Cost framework of motivation and how instructors might use it to develop deeper understandings of student motivation and how to leverage it in their online classrooms (Getty et al., 2021). Presenters will offer examples of how to put the framework to use in a variety of online classroom environments, and participants will be invited to apply elements of the framework to case study situations as well.
