Abstract
Academic excellence is something that almost every institution in higher education is focused on pursuing. Developing an understanding of what this pursuit entails is difficult because as Brusoni et al (2014) point out “defining academic excellence is not a simple task. The selection of a universal meaning is complicated because it is simultaneously linked to institutional environments and contexts” (p. 20). Given this difficulty it is important to develop a shared understanding of academic excellence within these contexts and environments. A shared understanding should impact the way that problems and opportunities are addressed which means the shared understanding can be described as an organizational culture (Schein, 2004). This presentation will explore how leaders can use collaboration to create cultures of academic excellence within institutions, disciplines, departments, and classrooms. Kouzes and Posner (2007) highlighted that “leadership is everyone’s business” (p.339) which means anyone can benefit from the presentation.
